How to prevent ice dams on a Springfield-area home

By Luis Sierra, 413 Home Pros · Updated 2026-10-16 · Sources linked inline

Short answer: Ice dams form when heat leaking from the house melts roof snow, which refreezes at the colder eaves. The lasting fix is to air-seal the attic floor, add insulation and keep soffit-to-ridge ventilation clear. Short term, rake snow off the lower roof from the ground, and never chip ice with tools.

Why they happen

Warm air from living spaces leaks into the attic through gaps around light fixtures, plumbing stacks, chimneys and hatches. It warms the roof deck, snow melts, and the water refreezes over the unheated eaves, backing up under shingles (University of Minnesota Extension, Dealing with and preventing ice dams). Western Massachusetts' freeze-thaw winters and many older, under-insulated homes make this common locally.

Long-term prevention (in order)

  1. Air-seal the attic floor around wires, lights, ducts, plumbing, chimneys and the attic hatch.
  2. Add insulation to the recommended level, including over the top plates at the eaves.
  3. Ventilate: keep soffit vents open with baffles and provide balanced soffit-to-ridge or gable venting. Powered attic fans are not recommended for this purpose.

During a storm

  • Use a long-handled roof rake from the ground to clear the first few feet above the gutters.
  • Do not climb icy roofs or chip ice with hammers or picks; it damages shingles and is dangerous. Hire a roofer for steam removal.
  • If water is coming in, catch it, photograph the damage and call your insurer.

FAQ

Do heat cables stop ice dams?

They can create channels for meltwater in trouble spots, but extension and DOE guidance treat them as a stopgap. They don't fix the heat loss causing the dam.

Will Mass Save help pay for the fix?

Air sealing and insulation are exactly what Mass Save weatherization covers (75–100% off approved work in 2026). Start with a Home Energy Assessment.
